Agrotechnology Imports in SE Europe: Romania and Bulgaria

What are the market and export opportunities for Agrotechnology in SE Europe? For watering and spraying appliances used in greenhouses? For harvesting or threshing machinery?

Romania and Bulgaria both have very dynamic agricultures, including in respect to vegetable and fruit outputs. They use mainly imported agrotechnology for the greenhouses and solariums, as well as for open cultures.

In the first 10 months of 2017, the Romanian imports of agricultural and horticultural watering appliances (TARIC code 84248210) reached almost 12.17 mEUR, while the Bulgarian imports of the same agro-technology reached almost 4.24 mEUR.

Are you looking to connect with Romanian and Bulgarian buyers of agrotechnology or importer-distributors and dealers of agricultural equipment and farm machinery? Perhaps we can assist you with the Market Entry and B2B Matchmaking. If interested to receive our offer, feel free to contact the FRD Center team at:

"Tomatoes Grown in Protected Areas" was the program launched by the Romanian Ministry of Agriculture at the beginning of 2017, in order to increase the greenhouses and solariums areas in Romania. This has proved to be a highly appreciated program by vegetable growers.

According to official data, the quantity of fresh tomatoes delivered in 2017 by the Romanian beneficiaries of the program exceeded 50,000 tons and the amount paid to the over 8,000 vegetable growers was about 24 mEUR.

In 2017, 4,397 beneficiaries were registered in the first production cycle of the program, and in the second cycle, a number of 3,627 beneficiaries.

Recently, the Ministry announced that all tomato growers in protected areas will also benefit in 2018 from the minimis aid scheme, namely 3,000 euros / beneficiary / year. Also, important sums from the state budget will be allocated via the Measure 4.1 - Investments in Agricultural Holdings - to support the construction of greenhouses and solariums for vegetable crops growing in protected areas.

A success story is a Romanian greenhouse recently inaugurated, the largest in the last 12 years. More than 2.5 mEUR, of which 500,000 EUR from EU grants, have been invested in the 16,000 sqm project. The greenhouse has state-of-the-art high-tech technology and focuses on tomato growing.

In Bulgaria, the open areas planted with vegetables rose by 37.7%, to 45,420 ha and the greenhouse area by 8.3%, to 968 ha in 2016 vs. 2015.

Some recent greenhouse projects in Bulgaria are mentioned in the HortiDaily news at: http://www.hortidaily.com/article/32506/New-greenhouse-projects-implemented-in-South-Bulgaria

The Bulgarian Greenhouse Growers’ Association (BGGA) consists of 51 owners of 272,7 hectare greenhouses in the country and 26 associated members which are companies with related business – vegetable seeds, greenhouse systems and equipment, substrate production, mineral and organic fertilizers, packing and sorting machines, greenhouses developers, service and maintenance companies.
