Furniture production in CE and SE Europe has a long tradition and is quite dynamic.

The furniture produced in Romania has recorded EUR 1.55bn in the first seven months of 2017. Furniture production in Romania recorded an average annual growth rate of 7.61% between 2011 and 2017. Some 77% of the furniture produced in Romania is exported.

The furniture production in Poland has reached almost EUR 10bn in 2016. With high quality products, the Polish furniture industry is a regional leader. According to market sources, more than 90% of the furniture produced in Poland is exported. According to KPMG's survey, representatives of Polish furniture companies are optimistic about the current and future situation of the industry - as many as 37% of respondents expect sales growth in 2017.

Turkey has become in 2016 the leading medium-density fibreboard (MDF) producer in Europe, surpassing Germany. Turkey’s wood and wooden products export was USD 731 mln in 2016, while in the period January-May 2017 it was of USD 321 mln.

Furniture production in Turkey is concentrated mainly in Ankara, Istanbul, Izmir, Bursa, Adana, Eskişehir and Kayseri provinces. The largest furniture manufacturing area in Turkey, called “Siteler”, is located in Ankara. The number of small and medium sized enterprises in “Siteler” is about more than 20 thousand.

Turkish furniture is exported to more than 200 countries. In recent years Turkish furniture exporters has entered many new countries, especially to the EU, with new designs and high quality products.

IKEA Industry invests in furniture production in Lithuania


IKEA Industry has announced in September 2017 its decision to invest in furniture production in Kazlų Rūda, Lithuania and the advanced technology will offer an opportunity to double the production capacity. The construction of the factory is scheduled to begin in the autumn of 2017 and planned to be completed in the summer of 2019.

The IKEA factories in Kazlų Rūda employ more than 700 co-workers, producing particle board and furniture. The year 2016 saw the production of 1.2 million pcs of ready-made furniture and 545 thousand cubic meters of particle board. IKEA Industry has been operating in Lithuania and Kazlu Ruda since 2008.

Egger constructs chipboard plant in Poland
The Austrian wood-based materials company Egger has started in September 2017 the construction of a chipboard production plant in Biskupiec, Poland. The Greenfield investment is estimated at approximately EUR 250m and represents Egger’s 19th plant and the first in Poland. The investment we will create approximately 1,000 new jobs. The factory will produce around 650,000 cubic meters of chipboards annually. The new plant is planned to start its production in Q4 2018.

Steico Group expands LVL production in Poland
The Steico Group produced in September 2017 the first laminated veneer lumber (LVL) board at its new, second production line in Czarna Woda, Poland. The regular operations of the line are expected to start during the first half of 2018. The new line is estimated to double the LVL production capacity from a current total of 80,000 cbm / year to around 160,000 cbm / year.

IKEA Industry started wood pellet production in Poland
IKEA Industry has started the wood pellets production in the Eastern Polish sawmill Stalowa Wola in September 2017. The newly pellet plant has a 60,000 tonnes capacity per year. This sawmill has a cut-off capacity of 400,000 cubic meters of pine logs.

Kronospan inaugurated new lamination line in Romania
The Austrian wood-based panel manufacturer Kronospan has inaugurated in June 2017 a fully automated melamination line at its factory in Sebes, Central Romania, following an investment of EUR 10m. The melamination line has implemented an automatic quality control system that detects up to 60 different types of surface quality errors. Besides the unit in Sebes, Kronospan owns another production facility in Brasov, Central Romania. Kronospan has invested approximately EUR 600m in Romania over the last 19 years and has 800 employees.
